Is the Rocket Pass What We Needed? [Rocket League]
Rocket Pass Mavericks |
So a little while ago, Fortnite released a new form of DLC: The
Battle Pass. And of course many developers copied this concept for their own
games. But one company no one saw coming to take their slice of the pie was
none other than Psyonix, the creators of the hit 2015 game, Rocket League.
What is “Rocket League” you may ask? Allow me to put it bluntly:
it’s basically soccer played with racecars. Sounds simple, right? It is; but it
has many layers of complex strategies and gimmicks within the game itself. A
good example would be the boost mechanic. The boost is shown in a visible gauge
that can store up to a maximum tank of 100. This boost, when activated by
holding down a specific button, greatly increases the acceleration of your car
and even allows you to defy the laws of gravity. All that considered Rocket
League is still a fairly simple, but entertaining video game.
The DLC within the game is mostly cosmetic, with the exception of
the cars. The cars/trucks all have unique “hitboxes” giving each vehicle their
own individual shape. This is where your personal preference comes in. Would
you like a Jeep with a box shape making it easy to hit the ball head on, or is
a Nissan Skyline GT with smooth edges and lighter weight creating availability
to make spectacular aerial shots more your thing? With over 50 cars in the
game, the variety of choices including decals, colors, boost trails, antennae,
and even what the car’s engine sounds like is what made Rocket League such a
popular game in the first place, and it doesn't seem like it’s stopping any
time soon.
So, if “Rocket League” is such an amazing and unique video game,
why get caught up in the Battle Pass DLC trend? Psyonix has even integrated
into the game Loot Boxes in the form of Crates. Well, with all the controversy
lingering around Loot Boxes, and with the Battle Pass rising to the top
of the gaming industry it really is hard to not snatch up the opportunity.
Besides, the Rocket Pass system is perfect for the Rocket League theme! As
mentioned, the DLC is mostly cosmetic, but so is Fortnite’s Battle Pass! One
more thing to state; the Premium Rocket Pass is purchased with ten keys, which
can translate into $9.99 USD. However, you can also obtain the Premium Rocket
Pass with keys you have earned by leveling up, or with keys acquired during
other Rocket Pass Seasons. It seems that with all the attention this topic has
attracted, Psyonix has been extremely successful with their product, and that
is something that Rocket League needed.
